Erica ogwumike4/2/2023 ![]() “I’m watching this kid play just shooting on the side and I couldn’t believe what her skillset was,” Flores said. Flores noticed Ogwumike and invited Erica and her sister Olivia to camp and the sisters began participating. Ogwumike, then an elementary student, wasn’t taking part in camp but happened to be on campus because her mother was working there at the time. “They’re buying into coach (Tina) Langley’s philosophy and then getting everybody else on board and she’s the glue that kind of gets everybody there.”įlores remembers opening up Cy Woods in 2006 when the school was hosting a camp. “She’s very goal oriented and knows how to get other people on that same path and I think that’s what was so special about watching her play at Rice is that buy-in,” Flores said. After high school, she attended Pepperdine as a freshman before transferring to Rice the following year.įlores said Ogwumike was quite gregarious in high school and loved being around other people but that on the court, the former Lady Wildcat was a silent assassin and the glue of the team. On top of being named a McDonald’s All-American nominee as a senior and the 2015 All-Greater Houston Area player of the Year, she also played volleyball and was the valedictorian of her class. Ogwumike was a varsity player at Cy Woods all four years under Flores, now associate director of athletics at CFISD, and leads the program in career points. The program was founded in 1991 and distinguishes female student-athletes in line to graduate for “excellence in academics, athletics, community service and leadership.” Former triple jumper and Nebraska graduate Angela Mercurio took home last year’s 2019 award.
